Calculate hydraulic cylinder extension and retraction speed from the oil flow rate, or calculate the flow rate required to reach a target speed. This free calculator supports Metric and Imperial units and accounts for the different effective areas used during push and pull motion.

Hydraulic Cylinder Bore Size Calculator

Calculate the theoretical minimum piston bore required to achieve a target hydraulic cylinder force at a known working pressure. Supports push (extend) and pull (retract) calculations in Metric and Imperial units.

Hydraulic cylinder push and pull areas with bore D and rod diameter d Push uses the full piston area with bore diameter D. Pull uses the annular area, defined by bore diameter D minus piston rod diameter d, with one continuous rod shown on the pull side. PUSH / EXTEND PULL / RETRACT D Full piston area A = πD² / 4 D = bore diameter Rod area is not subtracted D d Annular area A = π(D² − d²) / 4 D = bore diameter d = rod diameter
Conceptual cross-section. D is the cylinder bore diameter measured across the piston; d is the piston rod diameter. The pull sketch shows one continuous rod, without an extra rod segment.
